Been a little while since I last updated so here it goes....
I added a "remember me" checkbox to the forum login. It sets a cookie on the user's browser for 100 days. When the user comes back to the forum, they are automatically logged in. Once the cookie expires, they will be required to log in again. If they check the box again....cookie is set for another 100 days. Once that cookies expires....you get it. 
There's a little bug right now with the "users online". I'm playing with this, so bare with me. I just determined that I should have set up the date fields as GMT instead of the time on the server. That was dumb. Now I have to go back through the database for the forum on this website and change all the times to GMT timestamps. Will be a pain in the neck to change, but will make things easier for setting user timezones.
